Community Shout-Out
In February 2011, I was hired as JFS's Youth Leadership Development Intern, assisting both supervisors for Girls Give Back and the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry programs. I quickly came to love my position and when my term ended in May, I chose to stay on through the summer. I had the chance to work with professionals in non-profits, professionals in the community, politicians, and high school students who wanted to make a difference. The things that I learned as an intern—from how to use a copy machine to learning life lessons—are so much more than I have ever learned by working at a paid job or in a university classroom. I left Jewish Family Service with a sense of accomplishment, knowledge, gratitude, and appreciation that has encouraged me to pursue my goals with a sense of passion and pride. To me, that is worth more than any dollar amount. – Staci Benak, SDSU Student

Bikkur Holim—Friendly Visitor
Our Bikkur Holim—Friendly Visitor Program matches isolated Jewish older adults and ill/homebound individuals with Jewish companionship volunteers. Friendly visitors fulfill a sacred role by providing friendship while reinforcing that these individuals are not forgotten by the Jewish community. Bikkur Holim is a great act of kindness that has a powerful effect on both the volunteers and the people they visit.
We need your help! We have older adults on our waiting list who are waiting for volunteer visitors. If you live in or travel frequently to these zip codes, you can make a difference today: 92130, 92128, 92069, 92120, 92115, 92009, 92122, 92075, 92104, 92029, 92020.
Friendly Visitors meet with their match once a week for at least one year and provide:
- Friendship and conversation
- A connection to the Jewish community
- Empowerment and hope
- Emotional and spiritual support

Rides & Smiles®
The 2012 Volunteer Recruitment Campaign has begun! Join our Rides & Smiles® volunteer team and help us recruit volunteers. Our goal is 100 new volunteers by December 31, 2012. All new volunteers, and those who recruit their friends or others, will receive a coupon for a complimentary car wash.
Since 2004, the award-winning Rides & Smiles® program has provided transportation for older adults to medical appointments, personal appointments, pharmacies, banks, and more. Rides are provided by caring volunteers who donate their time to provide this valuable service, allowing older adults to maintain their independence. Rides & Smiles® is the largest volunteer-based transportation service in San Diego County, providing more than 1,500 rides by more than 250 volunteer drivers each month.
Rides & Smiles® works with a convenient, web-based scheduling system. You determine who, when, and where you drive. There is no minimum number of rides to provide and every ride makes a difference in maintaining the dignity of our older adults.
Below are the upcoming volunteer trainings to be held at JFS–Turk Family Center, located at 8804 Balboa Avenue, San Diego 92123. Pre-registration is required. Contact Rachelle Minteer at (858) 637-3042 or rachellem@jfssd.org to reserve your spot today.
