97 new volunteers donated 5,407 hours in June!
Where will YOU help this month?
The College Avenue Center, Hand Up Youth Food Pantry, Foodmobile, On the Go, or in our Administrative Office?
A Message from Our Volunteer Services Intern
I’ve really enjoyed working in Volunteer Services, where the small but dedicated staff connects caring volunteers (like you!) to the many different departments and programs at JFS. I was able to experience these connections while visiting the College Avenue Center, assisting at the Emerging Leaders at JFS Ruby Schulman Memorial Golf Tournament, meeting and honoring volunteers from On the Go Rides & Smiles® and Project SARAH, and even interviewing a long-time volunteer for the Volunteer Spotlight!
Working in Volunteer Services has been incredibly worthwhile to me— all of my personal and professional aspirations basically boil down to “helping people,” and JFS has enabled me to do just that. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!
Sincerely, Sarah Scherk

Volunteer Spotlight
We are excited to welcome Dave Kershberg as our newest volunteer for Jewish Employment Network (JEN). He brings years of volunteer experience, expertise, and a desire to provide service to people in need.
Dave was in the Marine Corps for 13 years before he found his passion for financial planning. While obtaining his MBA at SDSU, Dave took an elective in financial planning and “bells went off,” prompting him to change his educational focus. Even before he finished his graduate degree in Financial Planning, he was already giving back to local schools through volunteering with Junior Achievement.

Dave is a Job Coach in the JEN program, providing one-on-one guidance
and tailored advice to unemployed Jewish clients. Dave recounts his
first experience: “The client and I made the connection at JFS and are
continuing the relationship by meeting in person and discussing his
resume. I am able to provide objective feedback and he is very welcoming
of the advice. It is rewarding to know that my life experiences can
benefit someone else and give someone a chance that they may not have
had otherwise.”
“My goal is to educate. My focus and passion are
working with people who consider themselves the underdogs and the best
result of this work is self-sufficiency.”
If you are as inspired by Dave’s dedication as we are, give us a call at (858) 637-3051 to learn about the volunteer opportunities available with JEN.

We Are a Leader in San Diego's Volunteer Community
JFS and the AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Project Jewish Family Service is pleased to announce its plans to bring the AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Program (VIP)
back to San Diego County! It has been over a year since San Diego
County’s nonprofits have benefited from the support from AmeriCorps VIP.
JFS will train and coach nine AmeriCorps Members in the best practices
of volunteer recruitment and management and place them within local
nonprofits to improve existing volunteer programs. Even as some
nonprofit budgets shrink, adding volunteer support can enable these
organizations to sustain their services for families and children.
AmeriCorps Members will serve a one-year term in a full-time (37.5-40
hours/week) capacity. Community partner sites include:
If you would like to serve as an AmeriCorps Member for this program, contact Melinda Wilkes at (858) 637-3050 or melindab@jfssd.org.

Volunteerism Never Takes a Vacation
Summertime
may mean vacation for most, but JFS serves people year-round. Here are
several volunteer projects that have the greatest need this summer:
Hunger never takes a vacation – The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry
needs at least 150 volunteers this summer to help feed nearly 2,000
people monthly. More and more of San Diego’s hungry are lining up at our
food distributions. We need volunteers in our pantry and at our Murphy
Canyon and Camp Pendleton military distributions. We also need
volunteers to host food drives. Click here to register. Returning volunteers can register here.
Help San Diego's newest families – The Refugee Resettlement department
at JFS welcomes new refugee families every month. Our Immigration
department has expanded to include Citizenship and Naturalization
services for lawful permanent residents. The test to become a United
States citizen includes answering questions about U.S. history and
civics and speaking, reading, and writing in English. We need volunteer
tutors who are willing to work with a small group for approximately two
hours every week for three months. The majority of the students are
refugees from Burma. No prior knowledge is needed and all training will be
provided. For more information, contact Kristy Coleman at (858) 637-3367
or kristyc@jfssd.org. Start the application process now>>
Leaky faucets don’t dry up in the summertime – The JFS Fix-It Service program
receives calls daily from frail older adults who need help with minor
home repairs or safety modifications. YOU can help them remain safely in
their homes by signing up to volunteer! If you are looking to gain
experience in minor home repairs, we can set you up with a volunteer
mentor. Start the application process now>>
Medical appointments don’t take vacations – On the Go Rides & Smiles®
volunteer drivers are needed to transport older adults to medical and
social appointments this summer! Help us reach our goal of 100 new
volunteers by December 31. Start the application process now>>
