JFS Receives Star Award from Beverly Foundation

The Beverly Foundation has named Jewish Family Service of San Diego as a STAR Awards honoree for its Supplemental Transportation program

The Beverly Foundation has named Jewish Family Service of San Diego as a STAR Awards honoree for its Supplemental Transportation program. JFS of San Diego, one of 10 organizations recognized nationally for excellence in providing transportation to older adults, was honored for its planned volunteer driver recruitment campaign and its Rides and Smiles© transportation service which supports adults age 60 plus. Rides & Smiles© is an On the Go program that last year provided 18,133 rides to 849 older adults. On the Go is a program of the Jewish Senior Services Council delivered by Jewish Family Service.

The Beverly Foundation, headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, undertakes research, education, and assistance to encourage and facilitate mobility and transportation for older adults.  The Foundation makes STAR Awards in conjunction with its STAR Search survey that was first undertaken in 2000. The survey has continued annually since that time, and has gathered data on 1,280 STPs (Supplemental Transportation Programs for seniors) from 50 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

According to the Beverly Foundation's president Helen Kerschner, the STAR Awards recognize “the best of the best” organizations that provide transportation to older adults. “This year,” she said, “we received 450 applications for awards, and these 10 organizations, and many other transportation programs organized by Jewish Family Service, are making enormous contributions to seniors, their families, and their communities."

Jill Spitzer, CEO of JFS in San Diego, stated: “This is a tremendous honor for JFS in San Diego,” she said. “Every day we bring our determination and compassion to our older adults and provide the highest quality of services to keep them active in our community.”
