Run for the Hungry Thanksgiving Day 10K/5K Run/Walk
Jewish Family Service and the San Diego Food Bank are teaming up for the ninth annual Thanksgiving Day Run for the Hungry.
The 10K/5K (6.2 mile/3.1 mile) run/walk takes place on Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010 at Petco Park (13th & Imperial) and makes its way through San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District and East Village.
The 10K run begins at 7:10 a.m., and the 5K run/walk starts at 8:15 a.m. Proceeds from the event directly benefit Foodmobile, a program of Jewish Family Service, and the San Diego Food Bank.
Every year family dogs are invited to participate in the run/walk, but this year’s race organizers are taking doggie participation to another level. Officials are inviting participants to bring their family dogs dressed in Thanksgiving-themed costumes. Organizers anticipate an exciting array of doggie attire, including “Turkey Dogs,” “Doggie Pilgrims,” and “Pumpkin Dogs.”
According to San Diego Food Bank Board President Stephen P. Cushman, an avid runner who will lead the Food Bank’s running team, “The Thanksgiving Day Run for the Hungry is a fun run for a serious cause, and this year’s doggie costumes will make it even more enjoyable for families and children.”
“We are calling on our supporters to sign up for this year’s run because we desperately need the community’s help this holiday season. The San Diego Food Bank is feeding more people than ever before, currently 342,000 people per month, and the proceeds from this year’s run will be critical for us to meet the increased need. So get your running shoes on and help us feed San Diego’s hungry.”
Jill Borg Spitzer, CEO of Jewish Family Service, added, “More than 480,000 people in San Diego County face hunger every day. Many are elderly, homebound, and isolated. Our Foodmobile program delivers hot, nutritious meals to people in need who can’t access other nutritional services and depend on our daily meal delivery. Together, with the San Diego Food Bank, the Run for the Hungry helps bring the issue of hunger to the forefront.”
Spitzer added, “The 10K/5K run/walk is a great way to start Thanksgiving Day, and it finishes with plenty of time for runners to return home and prepare Thanksgiving dinner.”
