Jewish Family Service Receives "Service Enterprise" Certification

Becomes part of Points of Light's first Service Enterprise cohort in San Diego

In December 2014, Jewish Family Service (JFS) was certified as a “Service Enterprise” by Points of Light and CaliforniaVolunteers, the state office that manages programs and initiatives aimed at increasing the number of Californians engaged in service and volunteering. JFS is part of the very first Service Enterprise cohort that has been certified in San Diego. This prestigious certification recognizes JFS as a leading organization in volunteer engagement, leveraging its volunteers’ skills, talents, and resources strategically and thoughtfully at all levels of the agency.

The designation is a tangible result of Jewish Family Service’s commitment to connecting people and engaging San Diegans in meaningful service. Nonprofits are well known for providing human services to people in need; Jewish Family Service has reimagined its mission in the community and embraced its second role as a hub of volunteer activity and leadership. “More than 1,000 volunteers support JFS and its clients each year,” said Melinda Wilkes, Director of Volunteer Engagement at JFS. “That level of volunteer engagement is a direct reflection of San Diegans’ deep desire to serve others. Being a home for the entire community means that we provide both superior service to clients and meaningful volunteer experiences to people who want to give back.”

JFS’s robust volunteer infrastructure allows the agency to recruit, develop and retain dedicated, highly skilled volunteers that add value to the organization. Research by TCC Group and Deloitte estimates that for every $1 invested in effective volunteer engagement, organizations can expect up to $6 in return through more effective program delivery. Last year, volunteers generously donated nearly 62,000 hours of time to JFS, providing the hourly equivalent of 30+ full-time staff members. “Volunteers help us reach more clients with a higher level of service than we could ever achieve without their support,” Wilkes said. “Volunteers are the heart of JFS, and we hope this certification will inspire others to join our growing team.”
