Support & Psychotherapy Groups

You don’t have to do it alone.

If you’re going through a major transition or difficult life event, you don't have to do it alone. Join one of our support groups and gain insight, motivation, and encouragement. Groups provide an opportunity to be with others who are in a similar situation. You can make connections, share feedback, and get advice. Groups offer emotional comfort and moral support.

We offer professionally facilitated support groups to address many different issues. Group times and locations vary. Advanced registration is required for all support groups by calling (877) 537-1818.

Aging Well Group

College Avenue Center
Thursdays • 1:00−2:30pm

Aging Well GroupHave you experienced a recent difficult life event or transition? Have you been feeling sad or anxious? Are you experiencing feelings of grief or loss?

Aging well means taking care of oneself on many levels. It includes keeping the mind active, creating and preserving emotional health, and maintaining energy and a positive outlook. Jewish Family Service, in cooperation with the Kaiser Foundation, is pleased to offer a new support group for older adults experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and social isolation. Join others experiencing similar issues in a supportive, caring community to discuss:

  • Building and sustaining a healthy lifestyle
  • Bringing meaning and purpose back into life
  • Dealing with negative thoughts and emotions
  • Enhancing relationships

By participating in this group, you’ll build social connections, learn specific ways to manage symptoms of depression and anxiety, and discover tools for coping with stress and strong emotions. Fees are based on a sliding scale; Medicare and most insurance are accepted. An initial screening interview is required. For more information, call JFS at (877) 537-1818.

Parents with Learning Disabled Children

Parents with Learning Disabled Children

JFS-Turk Family Center
Wednesdays • 6:00–7:30pm
Six percent of girls and 10% of boys have a specific learning disability (LD). Children with LD have difficulties with reading, writing, math, and/or spelling, but may have social and emotional issues as well. Sometimes kids have trouble calming themselves down, expressing themselves, and making friends. Academic and social problems may lead to withdrawal and low self-esteem.

Studies suggest that group-based parent training or education has been successful in lowering parent stress and adding value to their children’s lives. Attendees will:

  • Gain a basic understanding of LD, different ways of thinking about intelligence, and common difficulties families with a child with LD face.
  • Develop an enhanced appreciation of their child’s strengths.
  • Acquire parenting skills and communication tools to increase their parenting effectiveness.
  • Reduce stress by adopting coping skills.
  • Enjoy a safe place to discuss difficulties with other parents who share the same experiences.
  • Get support by becoming part of an understanding and caring group of parents.
  • Parents of children with ADHD welcome.

$10 per session. Reserve a spot or request more information by calling (877) 537-1818.
