JFS Statement on Biden Administration Immigration Reforms

From Michael Hopkins, CEO

Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS) welcomes the continued immigration-related reforms from the Biden-Harris administration to strengthen our immigration system and applaud its commitment to family unity. We are optimistic that the review of the past administration’s harmful processes will facilitate an immigration system that centers on the needs of vulnerable individuals.

As policy initiatives, such as today’s executive orders, are signed, JFS urges everyone to focus on the tens of thousands of people forced to be in dangerous situations across the border. They are living in dire circumstances as a result of the policies from the past four years. Immediate action is required to ensure all those who seek better lives in the U.S. have the opportunity to assert their legal right to do so – fairly, humanely and without fear.

JFS works with asylum seekers every day – their stories drive our commitment to a more just system. There is a lot of work to be done, including ending policies such as Title 42, which allows for the expulsion of vulnerable individuals at our border.

We continue to welcome and assist immigrants and asylum seekers. JFS and our partners in the San Diego Rapid Response Network remain committed to providing services for migrants, including providing respite shelter services for asylum-seeking families, free legal services and education in response to ongoing immigration emergencies, and more.

Community support funds this vital work via www.rapidresponsesd.org.
