Keeping Families Together Program is Now Accepting Requests for Parole in Place

In June, President Biden announced a new program called “Keeping Families Together” to promote the unity and stability of immigrant families. The proposal includes a “parole in place”, or PIP program, for spouses and stepchildren of U.S. citizens who meet certain criteria. As of August 19, USCIS is now accepting requests, however, a Texas court issued a stay of the program temporarily. This means that as of this email, applicants may still submit Keeping Families Together parole applications to USCIS, but USCIS will not grant parole in place at this time. This also means that the program is now in the courts to determine it’s future. HELS will continue to provide updates as they become available.

Parole in Place is considered a lawful entry to the United States, so if it is granted, a person would be eligible to apply for permanent residency within the United States rather than needing to travel abroad. If granted under the Keeping Families Together program, Parole in Place would be valid for three years, during which time the recipient could apply for permanent residency, and the recipient would also be eligible for employment authorization during that three year period. More information and FAQs are available on the USCIS website.

If you think you may be eligible, it is important to speak to an immigration attorney or qualified legal service provider before taking any action.

BE AWARE OF SCAMS: Only Immigration attorneys and accredited representatives at non-profit organizations can give legal advice and representation in immigration matters. No one can guarantee approval of any immigration process, so don’t believe anyone who promises immediate results or special solutions. The USCIS website provides more information about how to avoid scams.

As always, HELS can provide a consultation to explore immigration options at no cost.
