Jewish Family Service Statement in Opposition to the Federal Administration’s Plans to Roll Back Healthcare Protections Impacting the LGBTQ+ Community

JFS strongly opposes the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) decision to eliminate non-discrimination regulations known as the “Health Care Rights Law,” or Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This egregious and immoral decision allows insurance companies, hospitals, and physicians that receive federal funding the ability to deny healthcare because of race, gender, or gender identity.

We know that this decision will disproportionally affect the ability of our LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender and gender non-conforming people and people of color, to receive critical healthcare services that affirm their identity and protect their wellbeing.

No one should fear being turned away by a medical provider because of who they are. This is unacceptable, and JFS stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community as we advocate for the reversal of this morally reprehensible decision.

The administration’s efforts to remove non-discrimination protections is especially cruel amidst a global pandemic that continues to affect LGBTQ+ individuals at much higher rates. As the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us all, these disparities can lead to devastating consequences.

In June and July, we celebrate PRIDE—a celebration and a protest honoring resilience, love, and community. Every day, we will stand up united in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
