The Mental Health Committee invites you to the 5th annual event in support of mental health awareness featuring author Elyn R. Saks, JD on Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, Saks has managed her illness and remained productive despite her struggles to sort what is real from what is not. Her book, The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness, was named to Time Magazine’s Top 10 Nonfiction Books for 2007 and is “a stereotype-shattering look at a tenacious woman whose brain is her best friend and her worst enemy." Throughout her history as an honor student at Yale Law School and associate dean and professor at University of Southern California Gould School of Law, she has been hospitalized, restrained, force-fed medication, and given a "grave" prognosis. Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? Enhance the healing process by reaching out to others who have also experienced loss. Join the Jewish Healing Center for this new Bereavement Spiritual Support Group led by Rabbi Aliza Berk, MFT and Director of the Jewish Healing Center. Together, you will address the social, religious, psychological, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the bereavement process. Rides & Smiles™ Volunteer Recruitment Campaign - WE DID IT!

In January, 2008, Rides & Smiles™ launched a volunteer recruitment campaign to recruit 30 new volunteers by July of 2008. The campaign was part of a greater effort to provide rides to 100 seniors on the waiting list in need of transportation assistance. On April 28, 2008, the program enrolled its 31st new volunteer, two months ahead of schedule! After only four months Rides & Smiles™ has drivers for all of the 100 riders that were on the waiting list! Thank you to everyone who helped make the volunteer recruitment campaign a success. We still need your help - Rides & Smiles will soon be expanding to the Golden Triangle, University City and College Areas as a component of the new On The Go Program of the JFS Senior Transportation Department opening in September, 2008. New Older Adult Transportation Programs Coming Soon!

JFS has been working closely with the Jewish Senior Services Council to develop an innovative multi-faceted transportation service to serve San Diego's older adult population. Transportation services will be focused in the North County Inland, Golden Triangle, and College Areas. The new program will include expanding the JFS Senior Wheels program; expanding the service areas for Rides & Smiles™ of JFS; transportation to JFS senior centers, the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, and synagogues; and taxi scrip for medical and personal necessities. The JFS Fire Response Program is compiling a Jewish cookbook to distribute to the Jewish clients affected by the San Diego Wildfires of 2007. In an effort to evacuate quickly many of these families lost everything they owned, including treasured family recipes. In order to make this cookbook a reality, we need your help collecting traditional Jewish recipes. First 5 Commission Donates Money for New Preschool in the Park Vehicle

Our Preschool in the Park program has a brand new van to carry supplies for the mobile preschool’s daily operations! Preschool in the Park purchased the 2008 Toyota Sienna van using its $30,000 grant from the First 5 Commission of San Diego. With the van’s extra storage space, our preschool program can now provide more fun daily activities to the children who participate. The preschool currently provides structured and imaginative lessons to 21 children per week and is located on the corner of Washington and N. Rose in Escondido. The addition of the new van, just in time for summer, will allow larger scale projects to be brought out to the park and make field trips for the group much easier. Read More.

New Prins Asylum Program!

The Refugee Resettlement Department has added a new program for individuals who are seeking asylum in the United States. The new Prins Asylum Program offers pro-bono legal assistance for scientists, professionals, scholars, and artists who fear persecution in their native country. Attorneys interested in gaining hands-on courtroom experience and asylum immigration case training are invited to participate by offering pro-bono legal assistance.
