We have many volunteer opportunities available with the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry, including working in the pantry and out in the community. Opportunities in the pantry and at military distributions fill up quickly. To register as a volunteer, complete the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry volunteer application. Featured Specialized Positions
Mandarin Speaking Specialist
distribution at St. Paul’s sees a wide diversity of clients in need of
food assistance. Among these clients are many monolingual Mandarin
speakers with whom we often have trouble communicating. This volunteer
would help us by translating, communicating important information, and
clarifying distribution details with clients.
Data Entry Volunteer
assist Food Pantry staff with entering client information and recording
amounts of food distributed into our client database. The Data Entry
Volunteer is vital to helping us accurately represent the populations we
serve every week through our distributions and JFS's more than 50
Food Donation Driver
receives regular donations from local businesses. Donated goods are
redistributed at our program’s 12 distribution sites. The Volunteer Food
Donation Driver contributes to the Hand Up team by managing the donation pickups.
Military Shopper Volunteer
distributes food to military families twice a month at Murphy Canyon
Military Housing and Camp Pendleton. In a struggling economy, many
families – including families who have never needed help before – are in
need of food. The demand for food has increased, and a specialized
volunteer is needed to help prepare for the military food distributions.
Nutrition Food Bag Expert
Hand Up Youth Food Pantry maintains the dignity of those seeking our
assistance. One way we do this is by providing specialty bags to those
with dietary restrictions such as vegetarian, gluten-free, and kosher.
Help us create these bags and provide clients with the specialized
assistance and attention they deserve.

Food Pantry Warehouse
Several Sundays each month there are individual volunteers and groups in the pantry sorting donations, stocking the food shelves, and assembling food bags. Pantry volunteers are encouraged to bring $5 or five cans of food each time you volunteer. Register Online>>
Conduct a Door-to-Door Food Drive
Volunteers conduct a self-directed food drive on their schedule. Hand Up provides door hangers requesting neighbors to fill a bag with food donations. You pick when you’d like to collect the food, then retrace your steps to pick up the food donations. Military Distribution–Camp Pendleton
Volunteers are needed to help to set up a shopping area, assist parents in shopping and carrying their groceries to their cars, and creating arts and crafts with the children to entertain them while their parents shop. Volunteers should plan to be at Camp Pendleton from 1:00–3:30pm. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a package of diapers to donate to military families. Register Online>>
Military Distribution–Murphy Canyon
Volunteers are needed to help to set up a shopping area, assist parents in shopping and carrying their groceries to their cars, and creating arts and crafts with the children to entertain them while their parents shop. If you can drive a pickup truck and lift 25-50 lbs, then you can help Hand Up serve food to over 9,000 individuals a year! The Food Pantry receives donations from Bread & Cie, Wal-Mart, and Ralphs in La Jolla. We need a volunteer who can pick up the donations on a weekly basis (day and times are flexible) and bring them back to the JFS office in Kearny Mesa. Military Food Shopper
The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry distributes food to military families twice a month at Murphy Canyon Military Housing and Camp Pendleton. This position includes picking up a rental truck and receiving food donations at different sites throughout San Diego before bringing the loaded truck back to the food pantry. Volunteers must feel comfortable driving a large moving truck, be able to lift 25-50 lbs of food, work independently, and have excellent problem solving skills.
