Audra & KaylaBikkur Holim (visiting the sick) is the Jewish concept of comforting and connecting with those who are ill or isolated.

Our Bikkur Holim Friendly Visitor program matches Jewish volunteers with isolated older adults and ill/homebound individuals within the Jewish community. Friendly visitors fulfill a sacred role by reminding these individuals that they remain important parts of our community.

Clients are matched with volunteers in a one-on-one friendship. Volunteers meet with their match for at least one hour each week to provide companionship and a social connection. JFS program staff create client-volunteer matches based on common interests, hobbies, and location.

Referral Process

Anyone in the community is welcome to make a referral. We are happy to accept referrals from friends, family, or other organizations. Our goal is to reach as many Jewish people in the community who need our help regardless of enrollment in other JFS or community programs.

Contact our program coordinator at (858) 637-3082 if you or someone you know would like to enroll in the program.

Enrollment Eligibility

The Bikkur Holim Friendly Visitor Program is open to any Jewish individual in San Diego County who might feel lonely or want more companionship. Generally, the individual needs to be homebound due to illness, frailty, or disability. Individuals should be in good cognitive and emotional health, enjoy conversation, and want the companionship of a volunteer.

Matching Process

A dedicated staff member meets with each potential program enrollee in his/her residence prior to a volunteer match. Volunteers are carefully screened to determine program appropriateness. Matches are made based on common interests, hobbies, and location.
