Hunger Advocacy Network

Hunger Advocacy NetworkJFS serves as the neutral convener for a network of San Diego organizations who have come together to advocate for state-wide food policy that alleviates food insecurity in our community. The Hunger Advocacy Network, a partner-driven collaborative, narrowly conducts state-level anti-hunger/food security advocacy work. Network partners develop a food security-focused legislative agenda to support each year, hold legislative breakfasts, and participate in California Hunger Action Day in Sacramento.

Over 440,000 people in San Diego County (15% of the population) are food insecure, having limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods.

The Hunger Advocacy Network is comprised of leading San Diego organizations, including social service agencies, food banks, and advocacy organizations.

California Food Policy Advocates (CFPA) values public policies that recognize the fundamental contributions of nutrition to health, education, productivity, and overall well-being. Since its founding in 1992, they have employed a variety of strategies to develop and implement such policies. CFPA offers terrific research and policy information about issues related to hunger and food security in California.

California Hunger Action Coalition (CHAC) is a broad-based membership organization of volunteers united in their belief that access to adequate, nutritious, and safe food is a fundamental human right. CHAC has been active since 1992 and has conducted Hunger Action Day every year since 1997. CHAC’s advocacy activities have won policy changes that have resulted in greater access to food for millions of people in California.

Western Center on Law & Poverty is a nonprofit, public interest law firm that fights for justice and system-wide change to secure housing, healthcare, and a strong safety net for low-income Californians. They employ a variety of tools to support their mission, including impact litigation, legislative advocacy, support of legal aid and community organizations, and administrative advocacy. The Western Center website is a great resource for staying up-to-date of legislative news (be sure to check out their Health section under the “Resource” tab).
