Hunger Advocacy Network
JFS serves as the neutral convener for a network of San Diego
organizations who have come together to advocate for state-wide food
policy that alleviates food insecurity in our community. The Hunger
Advocacy Network, a partner-driven collaborative, narrowly conducts
state-level
anti-hunger/food security advocacy work. Network partners develop a food
security-focused legislative agenda to support each year, hold
legislative
breakfasts, and participate in California Hunger Action Day in
Sacramento.
| Over 440,000 people in San Diego County (15% of the population) are food insecure, having limited or uncertain
availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods. |
The
Hunger Advocacy Network is comprised of leading San Diego organizations, including social service agencies, food banks, and advocacy
organizations.

As
record numbers of Californians struggle to put food on the table,

(formerly called food stamps) are sagging under soaring demand and
long-ignored problems that impair their effectiveness. Read their findings>>
Did you know that the US government does not directly measure
"hunger" or the number of hungry people? Instead, the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) assesses levels of "food security"
across the country. Learn more about food security and food insecurity and how they are measured>>
California Food Policy Advocates (CFPA)

in California.
California Hunger Action Coalition (CHAC)
is a broad-based membership organization of volunteers united in their
belief that access to adequate, nutritious, and safe food is a
fundamental human right. CHAC has been active since 1992 and has
conducted Hunger Action Day every year since 1997. CHAC’s advocacy
activities have won policy changes that have resulted in greater access
to food for millions of people in California.
Western Center on Law & Poverty
is a nonprofit, public interest law firm that fights for justice and
system-wide change to secure housing, healthcare, and a strong safety
